The changing nature of the EA

The EA, or executive PA, is no longer solely a support position. The modern EA job is a gatekeeper position, providing high-level support to either an individual or group of high-level executives. While it still includes plenty of diary management and travel planning, it has transformed into an advisory position, with a senior EA often required to make business decisions and contribute to ongoing strategy on behalf of their principal.

As such, the EA job, especially at a C-Suite or board level, can be a viable pathway for those looking to move into senior management positions.

What does an executive assistant job involve?

An EA job in London is generally a mid-to-senior position and as such, involves high-level administrative support, including diary management, travel booking, scheduling meetings, inbox management and gatekeeping on behalf of a principal.

Where an EA job differs to a PA job is the business involvement. Often (but not always), an executive assistant will take on more responsibility in terms of strategy and advice, producing documents, presentations and reports, as well as conducting research and liaising with other executives and UHNWIs.

What skills should an executive assistant have?

Someone looking for an executive assistant job should have extensive experience as an executive PA or PA and be flexible, extremely organised and have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. A great EA will also possess fantastic problem-solving skills, work well in a team and approach every task with a positive outlook. Because of their business involvement, a  C-Suite EA or board-level EA should also be commercially switched on, with a strong business acumen and ability to act proactively. As with any support role, discretion is of the utmost importance.

On the technical side, an EA should also possess advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and be comfortable with software like Google Suite.

How much does an EA earn?

In professional or financial services, an EA salary can range from £40,000-£80,000, while in most creative businesses, you can expect to command anywhere between £35,000-£65,000.

The not-for-profit sector generally has a smaller band, with salaries between £35,000-£45,000. If working in a family office, an experienced EA can expect to receive £45,000-£80,000.

However, it is worth remembering that an EA’s salary is completely dependent on the industry you are working in, the experience you have and the scope of responsibility.
