What to look for in a graduate job

Starting the job search after university can be daunting and time-consuming. With so many graduate roles available in London, just how do you choose? As a graduate recruitment agency, Tiger can help guide your search.

The best graduate jobs are dynamic and diverse, offering opportunities to learn and progress with every turn. They can be based in both small and large companies, but should always involve access to mentors and senior leaders from which you can pick up tips and tricks.

A graduate job in the UK should have clear training and progression opportunities, as well as established performance management processes, allowing for constant communication between employee and employer.

Finally, it should be multi-faceted and interesting, keeping you on your toes and introducing you to a wide range of responsibilities. This will help guide your career path, demonstrating the types of activities you enjoy – and those you don’t!

The qualities of a great graduate

There are a number of qualities that employers look for when hiring graduates, regardless of industry or role. These include:

  • Fantastic time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Creative approach to problem-solving
  • Emotionally intelligent
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Motivated and happy to muck in where needed

If you are looking for a graduate job but don’t have a lot of experience, consider how you might emphasise these soft skills in other ways. For example, did you play a team sport in university? Have you volunteered during your studies? These types of activities can demonstrate the above skills in a creative way.
