If you are looking to transition into a private household, a junior butler job is a great place to start. You will be required to assist the head butler in overseeing the cleanliness of a property, undertake silver service, attend to the principal and their guests and, if required, perform valet services. By working within a team of service professionals, you will also be afforded the opportunity to learn about the intricacies of butler service, including the caretaking of a wardrobe, fine art, wine cellar, silver and antiques.
Discretion is of the utmost importance, as is reliability and communication, both with your principal and other household staff
An under butler job is similar to that of a junior butler, with the title dependant on the household staffing requirements. For example, a larger household may have junior and under butlers, while a smaller household may only have one or the other. With an under butler job, you can build upon your communication and organisation skills to conduct a wide range of operational tasks.
These could include serving food and drinks, preparing and cleaning silver, answering the landline, taking messages and greeting guests while looking after their every need. As with a junior butler job, you will need to be flexible and open to running a wide variety of errands, all the while maintaining absolute discretion.
A head butler job is one of the more senior roles in a private household and involves the management of an entire team of butlers. They will lead by example, overseeing the care of silver, fine china and antiques, a principal’s wardrobe, travel packing requirements and in some cases, travelling with the principal and their family.
A head butler might train and manage other staff, as well as liaise with other senior members of staff, including house managers and chiefs of staffs. A head butler will always approach a demanding workload with a positive attitude and immaculate presentation.
A head butler looking for a new challenge or change of scenery may look for a travelling butler job. In this role, you’ll be expected to follow your principal around the world, visiting their various properties and accompanying them to any engagements. Due to the transitive nature of the role, a travelling butler will take an expert approach to travel packing and unpacking, as well as appear presentable during transit. You may also be required to perform a valet or driving service and brief temporary staff when necessary.
When on the ground, a travelling butler job includes regular butler duties such as running errands, silver service, conducting inventory of wines, dry foods, cutlery and other items and overseeing any events hosted by the principal.
No day is the same for a travelling butler, so you must be able to work under pressure and be incredibly flexible.
