What does accounts payable do?

An accounts payable professional provides financial and clerical support by overseeing payments, controlling expenses and reconciling invoices. It differs from an accounts receivable job in that you are overseeing the payment of invoices on behalf of your company, instead of sending out payment requests.

Accounts payable assistant jobs

An accounts payable assistant job includes responsibilities such as reviewing and verifying invoices, tracking expenses, performing electronic transfers, reconciling transactions and monitoring and analysing accounts.

Someone looking for an accounts payable assistant job will normally have 1-3 years of either accounts payable or general accounting experience, with developed data entry and data management skills. They should understand both accounting procedures and software and be able to operate with a degree of discretion.

Accounts coordinator jobs

The next step in an accounts payable career is an accounts coordinator job. This role encompasses managerial responsibilities, with a co-ordinator often acting as a point of contact for the entire accounts department, as well as external contacts such as vendors and clients.

Other elements of the accounts coordinator role include general bookkeeping, reviewing invoices, resolving discrepancies and preparing reports. Just like an accounts payable clerk job and accounts payable assistant job, an accounts coordinator job requires an analytical mind, financial acumen and confidence with procedures and software.

How much does accounts payable earn?

As an accounts assistant working in professional services, you can expect to earn anywhere between £28,000-£50,000, while in the creative industry, there is potential to earn between £25,000-£45,000.

In the not-for-profit or charity sector, an accounts assistant can earn between £25,000-£35,000, while in a small family office, the salary drops to £25,000-£30,000.

Finally, if offering your bookkeeping services virtually, an average charge can sit between £17-£25 p.h. However, your salary as an accounts payable professional will depend on the seniority of your role and the industry you’re in.

What qualities make a good accounts payable professional?

A fantastic accounts payable professional will be thorough and have an exceptional attention to detail, as well as have an analytical approach to tasks. Data entry, computer and accounting skills are also required.

What qualifications do you need to work in accounts payable?

There are no specific qualifications required for an accounts payable job, but it is necessary to have an understanding of bookkeeping and accounting practices.
