Submit Your CVHow can I make my cv stand out from other experienced crew?
Captains and recruiters review dozens of CV’s a day, so make sure it’s clean, modern and under one-page if possible. Have a clear structure with your personal details at the top, including nationality, right to work and relevant certifications, then list experience, skills and references. You should also include a photo, ideally high quality, in uniform (polo, tidy hair, neutral background). Avoid holiday or casual shots.
What documents should I have ready before applying for new yacht roles?
To avoid delays in the recruitment process, ensure you have these documents ready before applying for a yacht crew job:
Is it better to take a permanent position or keep working seasonally?
Choosing between seasonal and permanent work depends on your priorities and where you are in your career.
How long should I stay on a yacht?
At least 1 year is considered the industry standard for a “good look” on your CV. Anything less than a season (4-6 months) without a strong reason can raise questions about your credibility and commitment.
Shorter stints are acceptable in seasonal roles (e.g. Med summer or Caribbean winter) or for freelance or relief work.
Can I move between departments if I want to broaden my career path?
Moving between departments is possible but it takes planning. Captains like a versatile crew, but they also want to see you’re committed and capable.
For crew on bigger yachts (50m+) departments are more specialised and switching is harder. Once you’re locked into a department, it will take effort to move. It’s also important to note that constant switching without a clear path may make you look unfocussed to a future employer. Some departments may also require specific training requirements, so it’s worth considering whether it’s worth the additional time and cost associated.
To switch departments successfully, make sure to communicate your goals to your captain as early as possible and get certified or do courses that bridge departments. Volunteering to help another department during downtime can also be a great way to gain experience without making the formal switch.
How can I negotiate salary as an experienced crew member?
Make sure to research current salary ranges before going into any negotiations. This will give you confidence that you’re asking for an appropriate salary for your role, yacht size and contract type.
Next, highlight your value during negotiations by presenting years of experience and longevity on previous yachts, specialised skills, ability to train junior crew or positive references.
