In recent years we’ve seen a number of trends emerge in the world of work. Arguably one of the more unanticipated developments has been the increase of “portfolio workers”. The term refers to individuals pursuing multiple professions, either out of personal interest or simply to supplement their income. Our consultants meet a number of candidates working this way and, with technological advancements making it all the more achievable, the growing trend of portfolio working shows no signs of slowing down.
When Radio Télévision Suisse RTS approached us to offer our insight, we were delighted to be involved. This short segment features Jessica, one of our candidates, and David Morel, Tiger MD, discussing the benefits and challenges facing those who choose this unique way of working. Jessica’s breadth of skills and career paths is impressive: in addition to app development, she also juggles working as an actress and taking on ad hoc office-based assignments through Tiger.
In the film, David suggests what this means from a recruitment perspective. “If you are out there [on the market] and haven’t had a permanent job in a long time, then I think the perception could be that you are a flaky candidate,” he explains. Portfolio workers, however, may have an advantage. He goes on to clarify: “If you’re looking to temp because you have another interest or job on the side, it’s obviously something easier for us to sell to the client.”
